Your expedition begins on the Ecuadorian mainland. Arrive in either the high-altitude capital of Quito, nestled in the Andes, or the tropical riverside hub of Guayaquil. Upon arrival, you will be met for a private transfer to your hotel. If you arrive in Guayaquil, you’ll stay at the Hotel del Parque, a stunning Relais & Châteaux property set in lush gardens. This first day is for decompression and preparation; enjoy a quiet evening and a briefing on the adventure ahead before we fly to the ‘Enchanted Isles’ tomorrow morning.

Fly from the mainland to Baltra, a small world unto itself in the heart of the Tropical Pacific. Upon arrival, you’ll be met by your naturalist staff and transferred to the National Geographic Gemini. This shallow-draft expedition ship is purpose-built for navigating the remote reaches of the archipelago. Settle into your ocean-facing cabin and explore the ship’s Science Hub and Observation Deck. As the ship gets underway, we begin our immersion into the islands, where the wildlife is famously unfazed by human presence. Tonight, enjoy your first sunset in the archipelago as we set course for our first landing.

Today explores the central islands of the archipelago. At North Seymour, follow coastal trails past nesting frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies. The island is a hub of wildlife activity, where land iguanas roam among the palo santo trees. Later, we head to the lush, green highlands of Santa Cruz to look for the legendary Galápagos Giant Tortoises roaming in the wild. Standing beside these ancient, massive creatures in their natural habitat is one of the world’s most profound wildlife encounters. Return to the Gemini for an evening recap with your naturalists as we navigate toward the western islands.

Experience the raw, volcanic power of the Galápagos. Cross the Equator at Volcán Ecuador on Isabela, searching for whales, dolphins, and the elusive ocean sunfish in these nutrient-rich waters. In the afternoon, we land at Fernandina, the youngest and most pristine island in the chain. Walk across recent lava flows to witness the world’s largest colonies of marine iguanas and the unique flightless cormorant. The geology here is a stark, black landscape that looks like the surface of another planet, providing a dramatic backdrop for the ‘dragons’ that bask on the obsidian rocks.

Located in the extreme southeast, Española is a sanctuary for some of the archipelago’s most iconic bird species. At Punta Suárez, look for swallow-tailed gulls, Española mockingbirds, and seasonally, the world’s only population of waved albatross. The island is also home to vividly colored marine iguanas and a bustling colony of sea lions on the white-sand beaches. Floreana is an island of mystery and human history. Follow a trail past a pink-tinted lagoon where flamingos often feed, then visit the legendary ‘Post Office Bay.’ Here, you can participate in an 18th-century tradition by leaving a postcard in the wooden barrel for a future traveler to deliver. The afternoon offers a final chance for aquatic exploration; snorkel among sea lions at Champion Islet or take a Zodiac cruise to spot rays and sea turtles. As the Gemini begins its return journey toward Baltra, we gather for a farewell dinner to toast to our week in Darwin’s ‘Enchanted Isles.’

After a final breakfast on board, disembark in Baltra for your flight back to the mainland. Upon arrival in Guayaquil or Quito, you will be transferred to your hotel for a final night in Ecuador. If returning to Guayaquil, you’ll rejoin the sanctuary of the Hotel del Parque. Spend the afternoon at your leisure—perhaps exploring the historic town of Otavalo if in Quito, or wandering the lush tropical gardens of your hotel. This evening is a chance to reflect on the fearless wildlife and volcanic drama of the Galápagos before your international flight home tomorrow.

After breakfast at your hotel, enjoy a final morning in Ecuador before your private transfer to the airport for your flight home. As you look out over the Andes or the Pacific, you carry with you the perspective of a true explorer.
