The Evolution of the Expedition Experience

Your journey begins on the Equator, in the lush Andean foothills of Quito. At 9,350 feet, this is the world's second-highest capital, defined by an exquisite Old Town built upon ancient Inca foundations. After settling into your hotel, spend your afternoon wandering through UNESCO-protected colonial architecture, where colorful plazas meet magnificent baroque churches. This first evening is for acclimating to the altitude and the vibrant energy of the Andes before the wilder chapters of your expedition begin.

Today, go deep into Quito’s remarkable Old Town—one of the largest and best-preserved colonial quarters in South America. Wander cobblestone streets to admire the baroque craftsmanship and sample chocolate made from the finest Ecuadorian cacao. In the afternoon, head 16 miles north to the 'Middle of the World City.' Visit the iconic monument marking the Equator, where you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere—a symbolic start to a trip defined by crossing boundaries.

Trade the Andes for the Pacific as a private charter whisks you to San Cristóbal. Upon arrival, the transition is seamless: a short transfer to the port brings you to the Silver Origin—a luxury vessel designed exclusively for these waters. After a welcome cocktail and a chance to settle into your suite, the ship gets underway. Before nightfall, you'll catch your first glimpse of Kicker Rock, the vertical tuff cone that serves as the iconic, weathered sentinel of the Galápagos.

Zodiacs land you on the white sands of Darwin Bay, where sea lions share the beach with prehistoric-looking marine iguanas. Step onto the black lava of North Seymour to find a landscape teeming with life—blue-footed boobies performing their ritualized mating dances and frigatebirds inflating their vivid red pouches. The terrain is a stark contrast of prickly pear cactus and volcanic boulders. In the afternoon, Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island offers a glimpse into the earth's raw power. Walk across 'pahoehoe' lava flows that look like frozen black rope, a moon-like expanse that dates back only to 1897, while bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs provide a pop of color against the obsidian shore.

The Bolivar Canal offers some of the archipelago's most spectacular diversity. At Fernandina Island, explore a hidden cove where mangroves serve as a nursery for juvenile sharks and green sea turtles. Beneath the surface, you may see flightless cormorants diving or marine iguanas grazing on algae. Later, at Punta Moreno on Isabela Island, hike across a vast, corrugated lava field caught between the Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcanoes. It is a hauntingly beautiful landscape where Darwin’s finches flit between emerald lagoons and giant marine iguanas bask on sun-warmed rock.

Anchor in Puerto Ayora to visit the world-renowned Charles Darwin Research Station. Here, you’ll witness the conservation efforts for the island’s most famous residents—the Giant Tortoise. After learning about the captive breeding programs, head into the lush highlands where the microclimate shifts, offering a verdant habitat vastly different from the coastal lava fields. Spend the afternoon wandering through the charming art galleries and cafes of Puerto Ayora, the vibrant heart of the Galápagos human community.

Española is the oldest island in the chain, and its isolation has bred incredible endemism. Start at Gardner Bay, a stunning stretch of coral-sand beach where Hood Mockingbirds and Galapagos Hawks roam. The afternoon brings you to Punta Suarez, where sheer cliffs create massive thermals for the Waved Albatross. From April to December, these ocean wanderers perform their elaborate courtship displays here. Between the blowholes shooting seawater into the air and the colorful marine iguanas, it is one of the most photographically rewarding landings in the islands.

Your final full day of exploration takes you to Isla Lobos, named for the 'Marine Wolves' or sea lions that bark and snooze along its shores. This tiny sanctuary is also a prime spot to see Blue-footed Boobies strutting along the coast. Later, visit Cerro Brujo, where a massive tuff cone has been sculpted by the elements into a natural cathedral. Relax on one of the archipelago's most beautiful white-sand beaches, or snorkel in the crystal-clear lagoon behind the dunes where stilts and plovers wade in the shallows.

After a final breakfast aboard the Silver Origin, bid farewell to the crew and transfer to the San Cristóbal airport. As you fly back to Quito for your onward connection, the volcanic spires and ancient tortoises of the Galápagos fade into the distance, but the perspective gained in Darwin’s Eden remains.
