A Week of Caribbean Luxury With Explora (and Our Family)

Two optional hotel nights sit ahead of embarkation, and they do different jobs.

Friday is unscheduled and unexpected. Some folks like to land a day ahead so a delayed flight is an inconvenience rather than a catastrophe. Some just want a Miami beach day before the beach days. Either is a fine reason. Sleep in, put your feet in the Atlantic, and be fully unbothered by the time the rest of the group shows up.

Saturday we walk Little Havana in the mid-afternoon, at the hour when the light goes gold and the neighborhood shifts from errands to evening. Mojitos at more than one stop, because comparison is the whole point. Cubanos pressed while you watch. Ventanita cortaditos strong enough to reset your posture. Dominoes clacking, someone's radio going, the whole nabe doing what it does on a Saturday. Dinner after that is your own, or with whoever you have adopted by then.

Group breakfast at the hotel first, because meeting forty new people is easier with coffee in hand and a plate in front of you.

Then the transfer, then the terminal, then the thing where your luggage vanishes and reappears in your suite like a magic trick you paid for. Champagne is already chilling when you walk in.

We sail at 5:00 PM — out through Government Cut with South Beach off the port side and the whole art deco strip lit up like it is showing off. Which it is. Find a spot on deck for this one; it is the best sailaway of the week and it happens before most people have unpacked.

The first sea day, and the best day of the week to have nowhere to be.

This is when the ship stops being a floor plan and starts being a place. Find the Conservatory Pool on deck 11 with the glass roof cranked open. Find the thermal area — salt cave, sauna, ice fall, and the heated marble loungers that will ruin you for regular furniture. Work out which of the seven restaurants you are going to become a regular at, and put your name down for The Chef's Table before someone else does. Ten seats, seven nights; the math is not in your favor if you wait.

Tonight is our private welcome gathering — Club7 merch, the limited-edition luggage tag ornaments, and the moment the group stops being a list of names and turns into a group.

9:00 AM – 6:00 PM · arriving by tender

Provo is low, flat, and unreasonably blue. There are no mountains here to send runoff into the sea, which is exactly why the water looks the way it does — the kind of clarity that gets your photos accused of being edited.

Grace Bay is the postcard: twelve miles of sand fine enough to squeak underfoot, and water that stays waist-deep long after it has any right to. The barrier reef offshore is among the largest on the planet and sits close enough that snorkeling requires no expedition planning at all.

Or skip all of it. Get a conch fritter, find a chair, and do the thing where you look at the ocean for two hours and call it an activity. It counts.

Your second and last sea day, so use it properly.

This is Cellar territory — twelve seats in a room built for people who like being told what they are tasting. Or a long afternoon at Ocean Wellness. Or the 262-meter running track on deck 12, if you are the sort who runs on vacation, in which case, good for you, sincerely.

Worth knowing: three port days follow, back to back, and then you are in Barbados. Bank the rest now. You will want it, and there is no second chance for a lazy day after this one.

8:00 AM – 6:00 PM · docked

Antigua claims 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, which is either true or excellent marketing and honestly who is counting.

The real draw is Nelson's Dockyard — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only working Georgian dockyard left anywhere in the world. Then up to Shirley Heights for the view over English Harbour that shows up in every Antigua photograph ever taken, because it is that good.

Beyond that: zip-lining through rainforest canopy, swimming with stingrays, aged rums worth taking seriously, and old-town streets of cottages laced with cheerful fretwork. Or one of those snow-white beaches, and nothing else at all.

9:00 AM – 5:00 PM · docked · note the earlier departure

Guadeloupe is France, but France that grows its own vanilla.

Start at the spice market in Pointe-à-Pitre, where vendors hand you things to smell and then negotiate cheerfully. Colombo, accras, boudin créole — the cooking here is its own argument, sitting somewhere between West African, French, and Caribbean and answering to none of them. And the rhum agricole is distilled from fresh cane juice rather than molasses, which makes it grassier, brighter, and a genuinely different animal from the rum you know.

The island is shaped like a butterfly: one wing volcanic and rainforested, the other flat and ringed with beaches. You can only do one in a day, so pick deliberately.

We are back aboard early today — 5:00 PM, not 6:00. Set a reminder. The ship waits for no one, and neither does your dinner reservation.

8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Bequia is seven square miles and punches far above it.

Admiralty Bay is one of the great anchorages in the Caribbean, full of cruising yachts belonging to people who came for a week and are now somewhere in year three. Port Elizabeth still has model-boat builders working mahogany by hand, a craft descended from the island's whaling and boatbuilding past. Princess Margaret Beach is a short walk from the jetty and worth every step. The turtle sanctuary protecting hawksbills is the real thing rather than a photo op.

This is the port people do not expect and end up talking about on the way home.

Tonight is our farewell toast. It is the last night aboard — there is no final sea day on this routing — so we are raising a glass as Bequia shrinks on the horizon behind us. Bring the good shirt.

Arrive 8:00 AM · disembark

Barbados hands you two coastlines twenty minutes apart: calm and Caribbean on the west, wild Atlantic surf on the east. Bridgetown itself is UNESCO-listed, the rum lineage here is the oldest in the world, and the pink-sand beaches on the west coast are the sort of thing you look at and immediately start rearranging your return flight over.

Which brings us to the actual advice: do not fly home today. Give Barbados two or three days on the back end — Harrison's Cave, St. Nicholas Abbey, the surf at Bathsheba, and a great deal of unhurried nothing. We will set it up.

Ending a week like this by sprinting to an airport is a rookie move, and by now you are not a rookie.
