Evolution in Fast-Forward

The Galápagos Islands do not require a month to change your perspective; they only require access. This 8-day "Escape" is designed to maximize every hour in the archipelago, utilizing the maneuverability of the National Geographic Gemini to reach the most wildlife-rich corners of the islands. From the volcanic "pahoehoe" lava of Fernandina to the white-sand nurseries of Española, this expedition is a curated masterclass in natural history.

Aboard the Gemini, the experience is defined by the intersection of luxury and science. This isn't just a cruise; it is a mission led by veteran naturalists and certified photo instructors. Whether you are viewing the undersea realm through the ship's glass-bottom boat, analyzing samples in the Science Hub, or snorkeling alongside playful sea lions and prehistoric marine iguanas, the Gemini provides an intimate, 48-guest sanctuary. This is the Galápagos at its most efficient and its most profound.

Upon arrival, you'll be met by your naturalist staff and transferred to the National Geographic Gemini. This shallow-draft expedition ship is purpose-built for navigating the remote reaches of the archipelago. Settle into your ocean-facing cabin and explore the ship’s Science Hub and Observation Deck. The island is a hub of wildlife activity, where land iguanas roam among the palo santo trees. Later, we head to the lush, green highlands of Santa Cruz to look for the legendary Galápagos Giant Tortoises roaming in the wild. Isabela & Fernandina

Experience the raw, volcanic power of the Galápagos. Cross the Equator at Volcán Ecuador on Isabela, searching for whales, dolphins, and the elusive ocean sunfish in these nutrient-rich waters. In the afternoon, we land at Fernandina, the youngest and most pristine island in the chain. Walk across recent lava flows to witness the world's largest colonies of marine iguanas and the unique flightless cormorant. The geology here is a stark, black landscape that looks like the surface of another planet, providing a dramatic backdrop for the 'dragons' that bask on the obsidian rocks.

The island is also home to vividly colored marine iguanas and a bustling colony of sea lions on the white-sand beaches. This afternoon, enjoy some of the trip's best snorkeling offshore at Gardner Bay, where you can swim alongside playful sea lion pups in crystal-clear turquoise waters—a perfect finale to our time in the southern islands.

Here, you can participate in an 18th-century tradition by leaving a postcard in the wooden barrel for a future traveler to deliver. The afternoon offers a final chance for aquatic exploration; snorkel among sea lions at Champion Islet or take a Zodiac cruise to spot rays and sea turtles. As the Gemini begins its return journey toward Baltra, we gather for a farewell dinner to toast to our week in Darwin's 'Enchanted Isles.'

An Intimate Expedition Sanctuary for Only 48 Guests

The National Geographic Gemini represents the absolute pinnacle of small-ship maneuvering in the "Enchanted Isles." Purpose-built with a shallow-draft hull, this vessel is designed to slip into the remote, pristine coves that larger ships simply cannot reach. This isn't just a cruise ship; it is a highly specialized maritime laboratory that balances rugged expeditionary power with the polished elegance of a private club. With a maximum of only 48 guests, the atmosphere on board is intimate and intellectually charged, fostered by a team of veteran naturalists who bring the archipelago’s story to life.

Accommodations on the Gemini are some of the most generous in the Galápagos fleet. Every cabin is ocean-facing, designed to keep the volcanic horizon in constant view, while the upper-tier suites offer private balconies and floor-to-ceiling glass—a rare luxury in these waters. For those seeking the ultimate sanctuary, Suite 601 stands as a masterclass in nautical design, featuring a separate living room and a forward-facing balcony that serves as your private front-row seat to the cradle of evolution.

The transition from the ship’s refined interior to the wild shoreline is seamless. The Gemini carries a dedicated fleet of quick-to-deploy Mark VI Zodiacs, sea kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards, ensuring that when a pod of dolphins or a rare shorebird is spotted, you are in the water or on the beach within minutes. Complete with a climate-controlled Science Hub and a full inventory of snorkeling gear and wetsuits for every guest, the Gemini ensures that your exploration of the islands is as deep and immersive as the luxury provided on board.
