A Family Ranch Day Near San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

A day at Rancho Xotolar, a family working ranch near San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, milking cows, making cheese, riding horses and cooking tacos.

Rancho Xotolar has been in the Morin Ruiz family for more than four generations, and it’s still a working ranch about an hour outside San Miguel de Allende. We spent a full day there, starting with milking cows and making cheese.

Then we saddled up for a horseback ride through the rustic canyons before cooking tacos from scratch over an open fire. The fillings were fresh-harvested prickly pear cactus, potatoes, beans and the ranch cheese we’d made that morning, all wrapped in homemade blue corn tortillas. It was a hands-on day the kids won’t forget.
