Explora Club, Explained: The Tiers, the Status Match, and the MSC Back Door

Explora Journeys' loyalty program is young, generous at the start and a long climb at the top. Here's how the five tiers work, what each one is actually worth, how to match your status from another line, and the easy route in if you don't have any.

A young program that’s easy to join and hard to top out

Explora Journeys launched Explora Club in April 2025, added online points tracking and the status match that July, and has been widening the match ever since. It’s free, and if you live in the US you’re enrolled automatically when you make your first booking (you need to be 21 or older). Everyone else signs up through a My Explora account on Explora’s website or on board.

The short version: it’s generous early, thanks to a 5% fare saving from the second tier and a status match that lets loyal cruisers skip the climb. It’s a long road to the very top. Here’s how it all works, and what we tell clients to do with it.

If you’re still deciding whether Explora is for you at all, start with our guide to Explora Journeys, or, if you already sail Regent, Silversea or Oceania, why so many of those guests are switching.

How you earn points

Points come from three places.

Nights on board. Every night is worth 100 points, multiplied by your suite category:

  • Ocean Terrace Suites: 1x (100 points a night)
  • Penthouses: 2x (200 a night)
  • Residences: 3x (300 a night)
  • Owner’s Residence: 10x (1,000 a night)

Destination Experiences and onboard spending. You earn 100 points for every $1,000 (or €1,000) spent on shore excursions, spa treatments, paid dining, drinks outside the inclusive list, laundry and The Journey boutique. It’s awarded in 100-point blocks, so $900 earns nothing. Flights, hotels, transfers, the casino and the luxury watch and jewelry boutiques don’t count.

Referrals. More on those below.

Points last five years from your most recent sailing. Sail at least once every five years and your points and tier stay put. Go longer than that and you drop back to Classic.

A quick sense of scale: a week in an Ocean Terrace Suite earns 700 points, enough for Silver. To reach Gold you need about 51 nights in the entry suite, or 17 nights in a Residence. Platinum takes about 200 nights in an Ocean Terrace Suite. Diamond starts at 50,001 points, which is roughly 500 nights in the entry suite.

What each tier gets you

Tier Points The perks that matter
Classic 0 A personal welcome on board and member-only offers
Silver 1–5,000 5% off future sailings, a welcome gift, birthday Champagne, 5% off at The Journey boutique, priority service from the Explora Experience Centre, a cocktail event with the ship’s leadership
Gold 5,001–20,000 Everything in Silver, plus an extra complimentary laundry bag each journey and a surprise turndown
Platinum 20,001–50,000 Everything in Gold, plus 100 in credits for Ocean Wellness and another 100 for Destination Experiences on every journey, a laundry bag every day, and a behind-the-scenes bridge tour
Diamond 50,001+ Everything in Platinum, plus a private transfer to the ship, a one-category suite upgrade when available, a dedicated embarkation area, a complimentary culinary experience each journey, a personal shopper, and a free week at sea for two at 400 nights

The honest read: Silver does the heavy lifting, because 5% off every future fare is real money. Gold’s extras are nice rather than life-changing. Platinum is where the per-journey credits start to add up. Diamond is lovely, but it’s a long way off for most people, and the free week for two (in an Ocean Terrace Suite) only kicks in once you’ve sailed 400 qualifying nights.

The 5% saving, and where it doesn’t apply

From Silver up, members get 5% off the fare on future journeys. It applies to the cruise fare only, not flights, hotels, transfers, taxes, shore excursions or insurance, and it doesn’t combine with group bookings or net fares. Some advisor videos say otherwise; Explora’s terms are clear.

That matters because some of the best Explora pricing comes through groups. On those sailings we’ll price it both ways and book whichever comes out ahead for you.

The status match: skip the climb, once

If you already have status with another cruise line, Explora will match it to an equivalent Explora Club tier. The list includes Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, Crystal, Ponant, Scenic, Hapag-Lloyd, SeaDream and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and in July 2026 Explora added Princess and Celebrity. A few examples from Explora’s conversion chart:

  • Regent: Gold, Platinum and Titanium match to Gold; Diamond and above match to Platinum
  • Silversea: 250 or 350 days match to Gold; 500 days matches to Platinum
  • Oceania: Gold and Platinum match to Gold; Diamond and President’s Circle match to Platinum
  • Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection: Gold Elite and Elite match to Gold; Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite match to Platinum

The fine print, minus the lawyer voice:

  • Once per lifetime. You get one match, ever. If you hold status with two lines, use the one that lands you highest.
  • Platinum is the ceiling. Nobody matches straight into Diamond.
  • You start at the bottom of the tier. A match to Gold gives you 5,001 points, not 20,000.
  • Timing matters. Approved before you board, the benefits apply to that sailing. Approved once you’re on board, they start with your next one.
  • Proof and patience. Upload a screenshot or photo of your current status through your My Explora account. It usually takes about 10 business days.

If your Explora points already put you higher than the match would, you keep the higher tier.

No status? Take the MSC back door

Explora is owned by the same family as MSC Cruises, and Explora Club also matches MSC Voyagers Club status: MSC Gold becomes Explora Gold, and MSC Diamond becomes Explora Platinum.

Here’s the useful part. MSC runs its own status match, which accepts the big mainstream cruise lines and hotel programs such as Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott. So a traveler with no luxury cruise status at all can go hotel status → MSC → Explora.

Phil tested it before we wrote about it. He doesn’t have status with any luxury cruise line, so he sent MSC a screenshot of the hotel status that comes with his Amex Business Platinum card. A couple of days later, MSC approved him for Gold and added 4,300 points to his account. MSC Gold matches to Explora Gold, and that means 5% off Explora sailings. Total effort: one screenshot and one form.

Two cautions. Each match is a one-time move on each side, so if you have real luxury-line status, match that directly instead. And where you land with MSC depends on the status you bring, so ask us before you start and we’ll map the best route for you.

Refer a friend

Once you’re a member, you can refer people who’ve never sailed Explora. They get Future Journey Credit toward their first booking ($250 for US residents) and 500 points after that first sailing. You get the same credit when they board and 500 points when they get home. You can refer up to 10 people a year, the credit is good for 12 months, and it doesn’t apply to net fares.

So, is it worth it?

It’s free, so the question is really whether to care. If you’re trying Explora once, enjoy the welcome and don’t think about it. If there’s any chance you’ll sail again, get to Silver, either by sailing or by matching, because 5% off every future fare adds up quickly on a luxury cruise. And if you’re walking away from years of status elsewhere, the match means you don’t walk away from all of it.

Explora bookings through us typically come with $150 per person in onboard credit through our Virtuoso partnership, and on some sailings we can add more.
