Belizean Street Food in Placencia: Fry Jacks to Salbutes

A Belizean street food tour of Placencia, Belize, with a local guide: cacao, fry jacks, escabeche, rum and giant crab claws.

While getting ready to head out to Francis Ford Coppola’s private island, a local friend set us up with a food tour of Placencia, a Caribbean fishing village in Belize, led by Lyra, a local historical and cultural guide.

We started with cacao at Taste Belize Tours, then fry jacks at Carmen’s, a seaweed smoothie at Brewed Awakenings, a stop at the Barefoot Bar, Tiburón rum, escabeche at Wendy’s, giant crab claws at Omar’s Creole Grub and gelato at Tutti Frutti. Call it a history lesson you can eat.
