Osaka Street Food: A Family Tasting Tour

A family tasting tour of Osaka, Japan, from Kuromon Ichiba Market to Dotonbori: Kobe beef skewers, takoyaki, kushikatsu and okonomiyaki.

After a few days among the historic charm of Kyoto, we traveled about 50 km southwest to Osaka, often called “Japan’s Kitchen.” We tightened our shoelaces, loosened our waistbands and spent the whole day walking from bite to bite.

At Kuromon Ichiba Market we tried strawberries, smoked salmon, a grilled scallop, sweet bean paste mochi, bluefin sashimi and Kobe beef skewers. In Dotonbori it was boba tea, takoyaki (including a whole-octopus version), kushikatsu, okonomiyaki with sake, Kani Dōraku and a ten-yen cheese coin. We still found room for udon.
