Daily Zodiac landings in most conditions bring guests to Antarctic shore sites, wildlife colonies, and ice formations that the main ship can't reach directly. Viking's open observation deck is where passengers spend most daylight hours in Antarctic and Arctic waters — binoculars out, cold air in the face, nothing between you and whatever the polar environment decides to do. In Antarctica, submarine excursions allow guests to observe the submerged portions of icebergs (which are typically 90% underwater), bioluminescent marine life, and the seafloor ecosystem beneath the expedition landing sites. The submarines operate from the Hangar and hold multiple passengers per dive. The submarine program is included in the base fare on qualifying itineraries and is coordinated by the expedition team based on conditions. The Hangar is Viking’s sea-level expedition launch facility — a climate-controlled space that opens to the water at the ship’s stern, providing direct access for Zodiac and kayak deployments without guests needing to navigate multiple deck levels in expedition gear. The Nordic Penthouse is a fully realized suite on Viking Polaris and Octantis — a separate bedroom and living room configuration with a significantly enlarged Nordic Balcony, soaking tub alongside the walk-in shower, and elevated butler service.
