The World’s Only Nuclear-Assisted Luxury Icebreaker
The only luxury ship capable of reaching the Geographic North Pole. Inquire about upcoming sailings.
Le Commandant Charcot is not simply an expedition ship — she is a feat of engineering with a five-star hotel inside it. Launched in 2021, she is the world’s first and only luxury nuclear-assisted icebreaker, powered by a LNG/electric hybrid system that allows her to punch through ice conditions that would stop any other luxury vessel cold — literally. Her PC2 polar class rating is the highest of any luxury ship afloat, enabling navigation in multi-year ice and access to the Geographic North Pole, which she can reach without escort.
In Antarctica, Charcot operates the deep Ross Sea itineraries and reaches regions of the White Continent that no other luxury vessel can access. Onboard, guests are met with Ponant’s signature French hospitality: refined cuisine, a full spa, a Blue Eye underwater lounge where passengers can experience sound and visual art installations beneath the polar surface, and 135 staterooms and suites with private balconies. The expedition program is built around Ponant’s PONANT Pledge — a commitment to reducing environmental impact — alongside a roster of scientists and field researchers who add intellectual depth to every landing.
This ship is the right answer for a very specific type of traveler: someone who has already done Antarctica on a conventional route and wants to go further, or someone who wants to reach the North Pole without giving up the experience of a world-class ship. No other vessel does both.
