The Arctic's Best-Kept Grand Tour

Greenland is not a place you visit—it's a place that rearranges your understanding of scale. This 16-day expedition aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen traces the western coast from Nuuk to the remote Thule region, where the concept of "north" loses all meaning. You'll stand at the foot of the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site producing icebergs so massive they dwarf the ship, and then push beyond, into Melville Bay and the territory of Ultima Thule—the ancient Roman term for the edge of the known world.

What sets this itinerary apart is the depth of immersion. This is not a cruise that skims the coastline from behind panoramic glass. Zodiac landings put you on shore in communities of fewer than 100 residents, where Inuit culture stretches back 4,500 years. You'll encounter walrus colonies and breaching humpbacks alongside expert naturalists. The onboard Science Center and Citizen Science program transform passive observation into active participation. And the MS Fridtjof Nansen—a hybrid-powered expedition vessel with a near 1:1 guest-to-crew ratio—delivers all of this in understated Scandinavian comfort: from the Lindstrøm restaurant to the infinity pool overlooking the Arctic horizon.

1
Fly out of NYC, Embark in Nuuk

Your adventure begins with a seamless transition from the spires of Manhattan to the granite peaks of the Arctic. Board a dedicated HX charter flight from New York directly to Nuuk, Greenland’s colorful capital.

Upon arrival, board the MS Fridtjof Nansen. Settle into your cabin, attend the mandatory safety briefing, and join the Expedition Team for a welcome dinner as the ship navigates out of the fjord. As the first evening at sea unfolds, you’ll receive your custom expedition jacket and get a first look at the on-board Science Center, your hub for the next two weeks of exploration.

Crossing the Arctic Circle

Today is a day of transformation as we sail north and officially cross the Arctic Circle. The sun no longer sets, and the landscapes begin to grow more stark and primordial. Attend expert-led lectures in the Science Center regarding the fragile Arctic environment and the AECO rules designed to protect it.

This is a day to utilize the ship's world-class amenities—perhaps a soak in the infinity pool or a session in the panoramic sauna as you scan the horizon for whales and sea birds. The Expedition Team will host a special ceremony to mark our crossing into the lands of the Midnight Sun, signaling that the true High Arctic exploration has begun.

The Ilulissat Icefjord

We arrive in Disko Bay, home to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord. This is one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders, where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier calves massive icebergs into the bay. You’ll hike along the boardwalk to the mouth of the fjord to witness these frozen giants, some over 100 meters tall, as they ground on the sea floor.

Later, take a Zodiac cruise to navigate through the 'ice graveyard,' hearing the snap and pop of ancient air bubbles releasing from the bergs. The scale here is impossible to capture in photos; it is a sensory immersion into the power of the glacial cycle that has shaped Greenland for millennia.

Uummannaq Fjord

Beyond the Nuussuaq Peninsula, we enter the Uummannaq Fjord, dominated by a striking heart-shaped mountain that towers 1,170 meters over the sea. This region is a gateway to the far north, characterized by its deep blue waters and traditional hunting culture. We’ll visit the community of Uummannaq, wandering through colorful houses and visiting the local church.

The afternoon may include a Zodiac cruise to the nearby abandoned settlement of Qilaqitsoq, where the famous Greenlandic mummies were discovered in 1972. It is a day that perfectly balances the stark geological beauty of the fjord with the profound human history of the Inughuit people.

Crossing Melville Bay

We navigate the wide expanse of Melville Bay, a notorious graveyard for early Arctic explorers. Today is a 'day at sea' in the truest sense, as we push toward the legendary Thule region. Use this time to join the Citizen Science projects on board, helping to analyze water samples or track seabird populations.

The Expedition Team will share stories of Robert Peary and the explorers who risked everything to navigate these ice-choked waters. Relax in the hot tubs on deck or enjoy a Michelin-inspired meal while watching for the blow of narwhals or the distinctive ivory tusk of a walrus in the surrounding drift ice.

Siorapaluk: The Northernmost Town

We have reached the edge of the world. Today we visit Siorapaluk, the northernmost naturally inhabited community on Earth. Located only 1,360 km from the North Pole, this isolated village is home to a few dozen residents whose lives are still deeply tied to traditional subsistence hunting.

Walk through the settlement and meet the locals, whose resilience in this extreme climate is legendary. The surrounding cliffs are home to millions of little auks, and the sounds of the bird colonies provide a constant soundtrack to this high-arctic landing. This is a place few humans ever see, offering a rare perspective on the limits of human habitation.

Qaanaaq (Thule)

Formerly known as Thule, Qaanaaq is the largest community in the High North. It was established in 1953 when the original settlement was relocated to make way for the U.S. Air Base. Today, it remains a hub for Inuit culture, where dogsleds are still a primary mode of winter transport and traditional kayaks are used for hunting.

Visit the local museum and craft shop to see intricate carvings and traditional garments. The scale of the surrounding ice caps and the vastness of the Smith Sound provide a humbling backdrop. Engage with the local cultural ambassadors on board to understand how this community balances modern life with ancestral wisdom in the face of a changing climate.

Etah: Abandoned History

Today we land at Etah, an abandoned settlement that served as the base for many historic North Pole expeditions. The ruins of stone huts stand as silent witnesses to the era of Peary and Cook. This area is notoriously rich in wildlife; we will keep a sharp eye out for muskoxen grazing on the sparse tundra and polar bears that may be prowling the shoreline.

Explore the tundra on a guided hike, observing the tiny, hardy flora that manages to bloom in the brief Arctic summer. The isolation here is absolute, and the sense of standing where legendary explorers once waited for the ice to clear is palpable.

Savissivik: The Meteorite Site

We reach Savissivik, located on the northern edge of Melville Bay. The town’s name means 'place of iron,' referring to the massive Cape York meteorites found here, which provided a source of iron for the Inuit for centuries. One of the meteorites now sits in the American Museum of Natural History in New York, creating a direct link between our starting point and this remote outpost.

Navigate the iceberg-filled bay in Zodiacs to look for walruses hauled out on the ice floes. The graveyard of icebergs here is stunning, with giants grounded in the shallow waters, creating a shifting gallery of nature's finest frozen sculptures.

Sisimiut: Modern Meets Traditional

We arrive in Sisimiut, Greenland's second-largest city, where ancient traditions meet modern life. Visit the historic district with its 18th-century buildings and learn about the Saqqaq culture at the local museum. For the active traveler, a hike up the nearby mountains offers spectacular views of the Davis Strait.

Look for local artisans selling 'qiviut'—the incredibly soft and warm wool of the muskox. The town is a vibrant hub of activity, providing a stark contrast to the isolation of the Thule region we left behind just days ago.

Itilleq: Village Life

Our final landing is at Itilleq, a charming village of around 100 people located on a small island just south of the Arctic Circle. Known for its hospitality, the community often welcomes HX guests for a walk through their colorful streets and a local football match—a village obsession.

This is a chance to experience true Greenlandic village life, where fishing and hunting remain the primary way of life. Conclude the afternoon with a farewell toast on the ship as we make the final run toward Nuuk. The sense of community you feel here is the perfect bookend to a trip defined by human resilience.

End of Expedition in Nuuk

Today, as we arrive at Nuuk, you will say a fond farewell to MS Fridtjof Nansen, her crew, the Expedition Team and the new friends you will have made. The lively capital of Greenland is a metropolis compared to all other towns in the country you have visited over the last couple of weeks. If you have time before flying back home, it is a fascinating window onto modern Greenland.

After disembarkation we board a small boat for a scenic ride up Nuuk Fjord to a remote, abandoned settlement where you'll enjoy a delicious lunch surrounded by breathtaking Arctic landscapes.

Your small boat will navigate the pristine waters of Nuuk Fjord, flanked by steep mountain walls, as it takes you to Qooqqut, a former sheep farm now home to an inviting restaurant. Along the way, the boat will stop for a chance to try catching your own fish, which will be expertly prepared at the restaurant in Qooqqut.

Upon return to Nuuk, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, your home for the following night in Greenland´s colourful and compact city.

Enjoy an exquisite dinner at the hotel’s own restaurant, then spend a night in the city centre of Nuuk.

MS Fridtjof Nansen

Ship/Boat

Hybrid Power. Science Heart. Polar Soul.

The MS Fridtjof Nansen is HX Expeditions' second purpose-built hybrid-powered expedition ship—and a serious next-generation leap for science-led polar travel. Named after the legendary Norwegian explorer, scientist, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who redefined Arctic exploration in the 19th century, the Nansen carries that intellectual legacy into the 21st with one of the greenest, most technically advanced hulls afloat.

This ship hits the sweet spot that a lot of expedition travelers are looking for: real polar capability paired with genuinely comfortable onboard living. The Scandinavian design is warm and purposeful, the Science Center is legitimately impressive, and the expedition team is among the most engaged we've encountered at sea.

The MS Fridtjof Nansen doesn't feel like a compromise between science and comfort—it feels like a ship that figured out how to do both.

TBD Lodging

This trip includes stays at lodging not listed in the itinerary.

Some of our itineraries don’t list specific hotels, resorts, camps, or other accommodations in advance. In many of the destinations we feature—particularly remote, seasonal, or high-demand regions—accommodations aren’t confirmed until closer to departure to ensure the best availability, locations, and overall experience.

This approach allows brands to stay flexible and select the most suitable properties at the right time, rather than locking into sub-optimal options far in advance. As a result, exact properties, locations, and room types may vary from trip to trip, but the standard of comfort and quality is always consistent with the experience described.
