Le Commandant Charcot is not simply an expedition ship — she is a feat of engineering with a five-star hotel inside it. Launched in 2021, she is the world’s first and only luxury nuclear-assisted icebreaker, powered by a LNG/electric hybrid system that allows her to punch through ice conditions that would stop any other luxury vessel cold — literally. Her PC2 polar class rating is the highest of any luxury ship afloat, enabling navigation in multi-year ice and access to the Geographic North Pole, which she can reach without escort.
In Antarctica, Charcot operates the deep Ross Sea itineraries and reaches regions of the White Continent that no other luxury vessel can access. Onboard, guests are met with Ponant’s signature French hospitality: refined cuisine, a full spa, a Blue Eye underwater lounge where passengers can experience sound and visual art installations beneath the polar surface, and 135 staterooms and suites with private balconies. The expedition program is built around Ponant’s PONANT Pledge — a commitment to reducing environmental impact — alongside a roster of scientists and field researchers who add intellectual depth to every landing.
This ship is the right answer for a very specific type of traveler: someone who has already done Antarctica on a conventional route and wants to go further, or someone who wants to reach the North Pole without giving up the experience of a world-class ship. No other vessel does both.

What makes Le Commandant Charcot the ship

Gastronomic Dining
Relais & Châteaux culinary standards, all-inclusive
Ponant’s gastronomic program on Le Commandant Charcot reflects the brand’s Relais & Châteaux culinary heritage — a three-meal daily program of refined French cuisine prepared with seasonal and locally-inspired ingredients where supply chains permit. All dining and premium beverages are included in the fare. The main restaurant’s positioning provides views over the polar environment from the dining room, and the sommelier program delivers wine pairings tailored to each evening’s menu.

Blue Eye Underwater Lounge
Underwater portholes and hydrophone soundscape
The Blue Eye is Ponant’s signature onboard experience — an immersive underwater lounge positioned below the waterline with panoramic portholes that look directly into the polar ocean beneath the ship’s hull. Hydrophone speakers pipe in the sounds of the marine environment in real time. On Le Commandant Charcot, the Blue Eye is accompanied by a multi-sensory art and light installation that responds to oceanic sound data. It is the most distinctive single amenity in the expedition cruise market and a genuinely different way to experience polar waters.

Indoor Pool & Aquatic Space
Heated indoor pool, unique among polar expedition ships
Le Commandant Charcot features a heated indoor pool and aquatic space — a genuine rarity on a polar icebreaker, and possible here because of the ship’s scale and engineering ambition. The controlled indoor environment means the pool is accessible year-round regardless of external conditions, providing a legitimate recovery and wellness space during long transit passages. Combined with the ship’s full spa complex, the indoor pool makes the Charcot’s onboard wellness offering one of the most complete in the expedition cruise market.

Helicopter Excursion Program
Included on most itineraries
Le Commandant Charcot is equipped with helicopters that serve a critical function on extreme polar itineraries — providing overland access to sites unreachable by Zodiac and enabling the ship to operate where no other luxury vessel can navigate. On North Pole voyages, helicopter excursions over the polar icecap are a centerpiece of the itinerary. In Antarctica, they extend the excursion portfolio to include remote landing sites and aerial surveys of the ice shelf. Access to helicopter excursions is included in the base fare on most itineraries.

Spa & Wellness
Treatment rooms, hammam, fitness center
Ponant’s spa program aboard Le Commandant Charcot and the Explorer-class fleet features treatment rooms with a menu of wellness therapies, a hammam (steam bath), and a fitness center. Treatments are available throughout the voyage, with pricing at a la carte rates on top of the base fare. The spa’s design incorporates natural materials and the program emphasizes recovery and relaxation as a counterpoint to active expedition days.

Scientific Research Program
IFREMER partnership, citizen science
Ponant partners with leading scientific institutions and IFREMER (the French oceanographic research agency) to embed research programming into Charcot voyages. Guests participate in citizen science data collection, attend onboard lectures from researchers, and have access to environmental monitoring data from the ship’s own scientific instrumentation. On North Pole itineraries, the scientific program includes unique observations of Arctic ice conditions that few research vessels — let alone any luxury ship — can access.
Cabins + suites
Where you'll sleep.

Owner's Suite
107 m² (1,152 sq ft) / Private terrace / Sleeps 2
The Owner’s Suite on Le Commandant Charcot is the most extreme luxury cabin at sea — a 107m² residence with a private wraparound terrace positioned on the ship’s upper decks, providing panoramic views of polar ice fields from inside the world’s most powerful luxury icebreaker. The two-room layout includes a master bedroom, full living and dining area, and a premium bathroom with soaking tub. Butler service is standard for this category.

Grand Suite
56 m² (603 sq ft) / Veranda / Sleeps 2
A 56m² upper-deck suite with a private veranda and interiors designed for extended voyages. On Le Commandant Charcot — where North Pole and deep Antarctic itineraries can exceed two weeks — the Grand Suite’s generous proportions matter more than on shorter sailings. Butler service is available for this category.

Deluxe Suite
20 m² (215 sq ft) / Veranda / Sleeps 2
The Deluxe Suite delivers a private veranda and the full Charcot expedition program in a compact but well-designed footprint. All cabin categories on the Charcot share the same helicopter program, scientific programming access, Blue Eye lounge, and Ponant’s all-inclusive French dining — so the choice between tiers is primarily about square footage.

Duplex Suite
51 m² (549 sq ft) / Veranda / Sleeps 2
Unique to Le Commandant Charcot and not available on any other Ponant vessel, the Duplex Suite is a two-level accommodation with a bedroom on the upper level and a full living area below, connected by an interior staircase. The vertical layout creates a genuinely residential feel and offers one of the most distinctive cabin experiences in the expedition cruise market. Private veranda included.

Prestige Suite
32 m² (344 sq ft) / Veranda / Sleeps 2
The Prestige Suite features two bathrooms — one with a bathtub, one with a shower — alongside a sitting area and private veranda. The dual-bathroom configuration makes it particularly well-suited to the long itineraries that define Charcot sailings, where everyday comfort compounds over two weeks at the ends of the earth.

Privilege Suite
24 m² (258 sq ft) / Veranda / Sleeps 2
A well-appointed suite with a private veranda and Ponant’s all-inclusive French hospitality in a comfortable mid-category footprint. For travelers whose primary interest is access to the Charcot’s unmatched destinations — the North Pole, the deep Ross Sea, the remotest reaches of Antarctica — the Privilege Suite makes that access available without stepping into upper-tier pricing.

Upper Decks Balcony Stateroom
22 m² (237 sq ft) / Balcony / Sleeps 2
Located on the upper decks with a private balcony, this stateroom delivers the same Charcot expedition program as every other cabin on the ship. On a vessel that cuts through multi-year Arctic ice and reaches the North Pole, watching ice navigation from your own balcony is a genuinely remarkable everyday occurrence.

Lower Deck Balcony Stateroom
20 m² (215 sq ft) / Balcony / Sleeps 2
The most accessible entry point on Le Commandant Charcot — a private balcony stateroom that delivers the full Charcot program at the ship’s most competitive price. The same helicopter excursions, scientific programming, Blue Eye lounge, and Ponant’s all-inclusive French hospitality as every other cabin, on the only luxury ship capable of reaching the Geographic North Pole.
