Evolution in Fast-Forward: Our 8-Day Galápagos Escape

If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably spent hours doing the calculus of whether a Galápagos cruise is actually worth the splurge compared to land-based travel. After our time with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions, we can tell you with total confidence: it absolutely is. We didn’t just want to see the islands; we wanted to immerse ourselves in them. This 8-day "Escape" on the National Geographic Islander II (or the new Gemini in 2027 and beyond) is specifically designed for travelers who want an adventure-forward, action-packed itinerary that squeezes every ounce of magic out of the archipelago without needing to be away for two weeks.

From the second we stepped aboard, it was clear that this wasn't your average "sit-and-stare" cruise. Our days were jam-packed from the moment the National Park opened at 6 AM until the sun dipped below the horizon. We found ourselves hiking across the volcanic "pahoehoe" lava of Fernandina—which honestly feels like walking on the surface of another planet—and snorkeling in the turquoise nurseries of Española. One of our absolute favorite memories was kayaking while sea lions played just inches beneath our boats. Because the Islander II is so maneuverable and intimate, we were able to reach those remote, wildlife-rich corners where the animals are famously unfazed by your presence.

Aboard the ship, the experience hits that perfect "sweet spot" between high-end luxury and raw, scientific discovery. As a experienced world travelers, we were blown away by how seamless everything felt—from the flawlessly fast Starlink Wi-Fi to the "no keys" policy that made the ship feel like a trusting, private club. We spent our "downtime" analyzing samples in the Science Hub or chatting with the naturalists who magically seemed to have the answer to every obscure question we lobbed their way.

The best part? It’s completely unpretentious. There’s no stuffy dress code here; it’s all about getting your boots muddy and then coming back to a rain shower and an incredible farm-to-table meal. Whether we were opening our own oysters at a pearl farm or watching the sunset from the whirlpool on the Observation Deck, the ship provided a 48-guest sanctuary that felt both elite and entirely down-to-earth. If you’re looking for the most efficient, profound, and "wow"-filled way to see Darwin's laboratory, this is it.

Upon arrival, you will be met for a private transfer to your hotel. If you arrive in Guayaquil, you’ll stay at the Hotel del Parque, a stunning Relais & Châteaux property set in lush gardens. Embarkation in Baltra

Fly from the mainland to Baltra, a small world unto itself in the heart of the Tropical Pacific. Upon arrival, you'll be met by your naturalist staff and transferred to the National Geographic Gemini. This shallow-draft expedition ship is purpose-built for navigating the remote reaches of the archipelago. Settle into your ocean-facing cabin and explore the ship’s Science Hub and Observation Deck. As the ship gets underway, we begin our immersion into the islands, where the wildlife is famously unfazed by human presence. Tonight, enjoy your first sunset in the archipelago as we set course for our first landing.

North Seymour & Santa Cruz

Today explores the central islands of the archipelago. At North Seymour, follow coastal trails past nesting frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies. The island is a hub of wildlife activity, where land iguanas roam among the palo santo trees. Later, we head to the lush, green highlands of Santa Cruz to look for the legendary Galápagos Giant Tortoises roaming in the wild. Standing beside these ancient, massive creatures in their natural habitat is one of the world's most profound wildlife encounters. Return to the Gemini for an evening recap with your naturalists as we navigate toward the western islands.

Isabela & Fernandina

Experience the raw, volcanic power of the Galápagos. Cross the Equator at Volcán Ecuador on Isabela, searching for whales, dolphins, and the elusive ocean sunfish in these nutrient-rich waters. In the afternoon, we land at Fernandina, the youngest and most pristine island in the chain. Walk across recent lava flows to witness the world's largest colonies of marine iguanas and the unique flightless cormorant. The geology here is a stark, black landscape that looks like the surface of another planet, providing a dramatic backdrop for the 'dragons' that bask on the obsidian rocks.

Española’s Bird Paradise

Located in the extreme southeast, Española is a sanctuary for some of the archipelago's most iconic bird species. At Punta Suárez, look for swallow-tailed gulls, Española mockingbirds, and seasonally, the world’s only population of waved albatross. The island is also home to vividly colored marine iguanas and a bustling colony of sea lions on the white-sand beaches. This afternoon, enjoy some of the trip's best snorkeling offshore at Gardner Bay, where you can swim alongside playful sea lion pups in crystal-clear turquoise waters—a perfect finale to our time in the southern islands.

Floreana & Post Office Bay

Floreana is an island of mystery and human history. Follow a trail past a pink-tinted lagoon where flamingos often feed, then visit the legendary 'Post Office Bay.' Here, you can participate in an 18th-century tradition by leaving a postcard in the wooden barrel for a future traveler to deliver. The afternoon offers a final chance for aquatic exploration; snorkel among sea lions at Champion Islet or take a Zodiac cruise to spot rays and sea turtles. As the Gemini begins its return journey toward Baltra, we gather for a farewell dinner to toast to our week in Darwin's 'Enchanted Isles.'

We’re Jess and Justin.

We're adventure junkies and outdoor enthusiasts. And, oh yeah- we live and travel full-time in our RV!

But we haven’t always been travelers! We grew up in proper meat-and-potato lovin’ families from the Midwestern United States that took the occasional road trip- but neither of us left the country until we were older (Jess when she was 18, Justin when he was 27!). After scrimping and saving for our wedding in 2017, we went on our first big trip for our honeymoon to Japan- and our wanderlusty hearts have been totally hooked ever since.

Since our fateful honeymoon, we’ve worked hard to incorporate travel into our busy lives- figuring out how to travel in budget-friendly ways (and when it’s okay to splurge), how to have adventure travel experiences even though we aren’t REI models, how to immerse ourselves in a different culture if we’re visiting within a compact timeline, and oh so much more. And we started learning so many tips and tricks about travel, that we decided to start this blog, Uprooted Traveler, about it!

In late 2019, we moved after a lifetime in St. Louis, Missouri to Seattle for Jess’ job as a corporate attorney. This turned out to be SUCH a blessing- when the world shut down in 2020, it was easy to pivot from our busy international travel schedule to road trips around national parks, sleeping on mountaintops, and lowkey backcountry meals.

By 2023, Uprooted Traveler had grown to the point, where we decided to go on our biggest adventure yet- we quit our jobs, sold our house in Seattle, and moved into our RV to explore North America and work on our business full-time.

And that aligns with the mission of Uprooted Traveler- to share practical tips and advice on how to make the most of this crazy short life and explore this big, beautiful world, all while leaving it better than we found it.
