Quark Expeditions
For more than 30 years, Quark Expeditions has been leading travelers into the most remote corners of the Arctic and Antarctica. Known for their icebreaker heritage, helicopter access, and deep operational expertise, Quark is built for travelers who want more than a cruise—they want a true expedition.

Founded in 1991, Quark Expeditions helped define what modern polar travel looks like. Long before Antarctica became widely accessible, Quark was chartering former Soviet icebreakers and bringing small groups of travelers into places few civilians had ever seen. That pioneering DNA still defines the company’s identity today: serious polar focus, small groups, and itineraries that prioritize access over amenities.
Much of Quark’s fleet is chartered and purpose-selected for specific polar missions, allowing the brand to deploy different vessels depending on route and ice conditions. Their standout ship, however, is Ultramarine—a purpose-built expedition vessel designed specifically for Quark’s style of exploration. Equipped with two twin-engine helicopters, a full suite of Zodiacs, and cutting-edge polar capabilities, Ultramarine dramatically expands what’s possible in both Antarctica and the High Arctic.
Quark’s Arctic programming is particularly strong, spanning Svalbard, Greenland, the Canadian High Arctic, and even voyages to the geographic North Pole aboard nuclear-powered icebreakers. While the onboard experience is comfortable and contemporary, the focus remains squarely on exploration. With experienced expedition leaders, robust educational programming, and limited guest capacity to maximize landings and wildlife encounters, Quark continues to appeal to travelers who want to go farther, break ice, and return home with stories few others can tell.
